Sunflowers Are For The Birds!

I love sunflowers. Don’t tell my zinnias. But it’s a close tie for my favorite direct sow garden annual. Sunflowers are so great – especially when you can harvest the heads to dry for birds seed. OR! A tasty roasted snack on a cool fall day.

I direct sow my sunflowers through the week of July 4th so I have mammoth happiness clear into October when all the other flowers have grown tired. I have even donated my mammoth varieties to science classes for the kids to study the vascular system of the plant. Can you imagine 13 foot sunflowers driving down Main Street atop ye ol trusty Honda? It happens. And it’s allllll good in the Helen Hood!! #BeTheGood and find creative excuses USES to plant more annuals in your garden!!
